Got questions about using an electronic notary journal? Browse our comprehensive FAQ section to learn more about state legal compliance, backups, security, and state-wide regulations.
The vast majority of states allow electronic notary journals, including California, Texas, Florida, New York, Arizona, Nevada, Oregon, Washington, and many more. In most states, as long as the eJournal remains secure, chronological, and capable of capturing signatures while protecting sensitive signer data, it fully satisfies state notary public compliance rules.
Mandatory vs. Optional: In states like Nevada, Ohio, and Colorado, keeping an electronic journal is strictly mandatory when performing remote online notarizations. In states like Texas or New Mexico, traditional notaries are given the option to use a tamper-evident electronic journal instead of a paper book.
Tamper-Evident Tech: Virtually every state permitting e-journals requires the file format to be secure and "tamper-evident" (meaning any modification to the entry after it is saved will leave a visible digital audit trail).
